The Public Health Act 2010 and Regulation 2022 have requirements for water utilities (town water), private water suppliers (commercial properties with their own water supply) and water carters (transporters of drinking water).
Sydney Water provides safe drinking water to the majority of Sydney residents. However, in some semi-rural areas of Sydney, such as the northern parts of The Hills Shire Council, reticulated town water is not provided to residents or businesses.
Our Public Health Unit can provide information and advice on ensuring safe water supplies in these areas.
Commercial businesses who supply water as part of that business, eg. caravan parks, cafes, restaurants are classified as ‘private water suppliers’ and are required to comply with the Public Health Act 2010 and Regulation 2022 by preparing a Quality Assurance Plan and submitting this plan to the Public Health Unit.

Sydney Water, Councils, and private operators can collect, treat and provide recycled water to consumers. They are required to comply with strict controls to ensure that the recycled water is treated appropriately, and that the water is used appropriately and is not a public health risk.
