Climate change is increasing temperatures and causing more intense heatwaves, floods, droughts and bushfires. These extreme weather events all affect health. Extreme heat however, causes more deaths in Australia than all the others combined and these deaths are preventable. Some people are more affected by heat, such as children and babies, pregnant or breastfeeding women, older adults, people with disability, people with medical conditions and outdoor workers. Extreme heat occurs more often in Western Sydney than the rest of Sydney. This is due to a combination of climate change, local geography, low canopy cover and increasing urban development.
