Medical imaging (also known as radiology or diagnostic imaging) refers to several different technologies that are used to produce images of internal bodily structures including bones, organs and tissues. These images help medical staff to diagnose, treat or monitor medical conditions.
Each type of medical imaging technology gives different information about the area of the body being studied or treated.

How to access this service
You need a referral from your GP or medical practitioner to access this service.
We accept all valid medical imaging referrals, not just those specifically addressed to the hospital.
Cost for this service
All eligible examinations are fully covered by Medicare with no out of pocket expenses.
Charges apply for examinations that aren't covered by Medicare.
Location

Blacktown Hospital location
To get to the Medical Imaging department:
- enter via the main entrance of Blacktown Hospital (Entry 1)
- move through the atrium then head towards the Main Reception area
- from this point, move towards Hospital Street then head into Building B which is opposite Gloria Jeans Coffee
- once through the glass doors, travel past the Surgical Bookings counter then move past the staircase on the right-hand side until you reach the corridor that leads to the Medical Imaging Department.
Mount Druitt Hospital location
To get to the Medical Imaging department:
- enter via the main entrance of Mount Druitt Hospital which is on the second floor, next to the Emergency Department
- turn left along the main corridor towards the Emergency Department until you reach the Medical Imaging Department.
What to bring to your appointment
- your referral letter
- your Medicare card
- any previous scans you have had for the same area of the body or for the same medical condition
- comfortable clothing to wear
- a list of medications you take (or the boxes). Please include medicines you have bought without a prescription like herbal supplements and vitamins
- glasses, hearing aid, walking frame (if you need them)
- your carer if you need assistance in any way, e.g. moving from chair to chair or using the toilet

Your test results
Your test results will be faxed to your referring doctor.
You can also collect your results directly from the BMDH Medical Imaging Department.
