The Westmead Redevelopment Project and the Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals Expansion Project are major initiatives of the NSW Government, and enable WSLHD to change the way it cares for our community.
The projects are part of the NSW Government’s commitment to:
- Keep people healthy and out of hospital;
- Provide world-class clinical services with timely access and effective infrastructure, and
- Invest in critical infrastructure.
Expansions to existing services will meet increasing demand, and the creation of new services will reduce the need to travel for treatment. The project also includes new clinical technology and a re-evaluation of service delivery so facilities provide the best contemporary hospital care. To make sure we get it right, staff, patients, carers and the community are involved in planning and design.

Research and Education Network (REN)
Western Sydney Local Health District’s research and teaching program enjoys an international reputation. The Research and Education Network (REN) governs and nurtures research and teaching at WSLHD, and helps provide an environment that fosters innovation.
As a result, research leads are translated to improved outcomes, quality and safety of patient care, and we develop expert health practitioners who innovate and lead us into the future of health care.
To develop as a globally recognised academic health care centre, Western Sydney Local Health District works in partnership with multiple stakeholders. The partnership includes:
- The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network;
- Three major university partners: University of Sydney, Western Sydney University, University of Notre Dame Australia, and
- Two medical research institutes: the Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR) and the Children’s Medical Research Institute
Recognising our existing deep historical relationships in clinical care, education and research, this partnership enables a vibrant clinical culture, which embeds expert teaching and research in every interaction.
Pay and salary packaging
As a NSW Health employee, you are paid the salary set out in your role description, plus a compulsory employer superannuation contribution (9.5% of salary) and an annual leave loading (17.5%).
Salary packaging is available to most permanent full-time, permanent part-time and temporary employees. Salary packaging is an easy way to increase your take-home pay by paying for approved personal expenses using your gross salary (that is, your salary before tax is deducted) up to an annual limit of $9009. For example, if you are earning around $90,000 the salary benefit is about $2000.
In addition, you have the opportunity to turn more of your salary into tax-free income through our Meal Entertainment Program, which works in a similar way to salary packaging. Eligible employees can claim food and beverage expenses purchased under certain circumstances, up to an annual limit of $2,650, as an additional benefit.
WSLHD has four vehicle leasing providers for staff to choose from, allowing you to pay the finance and running costs of the car out of your pre-tax salary.
