Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine (AYAM)

The Department of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Westmead Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient services to adolescents with complex health care needs and their families.

In 1983, the Department of Adolescent Medicine opened Australia’s first Adolescent Medical Ward as a Centre of Excellence for medically compromised young people. The Adolescent Ward is complemented by outpatient clinics delivering a range of assessment and intervention services, primarily focusing on adolescents with eating disorders and other complex health care needs.

Clinical services are provided to young people aged between 14 years nine months up to 18 years, and still attending high school. The Department is also active in promoting a better understanding of adolescent health issues through research, education and training activities.
