Established in 1983, the Adolescent Ward at Westmead Hospital was the first dedicated inpatient Adolescent Ward commissioned in Australia.
The Adolescent Ward (A4c) is located on Level 4 of the A-B Block, Westmead Hospital.
Currently the Adolescent Ward is an eight-bed inpatient facility where the majority of adolescents are admitted when medically compromised for treatment of anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders.
The Adolescent ward has a long history of caring for young people with eating disorders.
Research and expert clinical experience under lay the philosophy of the program which is to provide a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment that enhances the opportunity for return to a healthy weight and healthy eating patterns within the context of individual, group and family support.
The criteria for admission is that the patient is aged between 14 years and nine months and 18 years (still attending high school), and cannot be managed as an outpatient.
