Service overview
We provide specialist expertise for a wide range of acute eye conditions including (but not limited to):
- cataracts
- corneal disease
- eye trauma and emergencies
- general ophthalmological conditions
- glaucoma
- medical retina (macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, inherited disease)
- minor operations
- neuro-ophthalmology
- oculoplastics (eyelid disorders, watery eye, orbital disease)
- strabismus
- uveitis /inflammatory eye conditions
- vitreoretinal surgery (retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes)
Who we see
Adults aged 16 years and over.
Exclusion criteria
- children and young adults under 16 years of age
- for a list of conditions that are not routinely seen at Westmead Eye Clinic, refer to page 2 of the Ophthalmology Referral Guidelines. These conditions may be appropriately
managed by a local ophthalmologist, GP or optometrist until they reach the clinical thresholds identified in the Referral Guidelines.
Referral guidelines
To ensure your referral is appropriate and that you provide all necessary information, please refer to the Statewide Referral Criteria for Opthalmology. This will assist our staff to accurately triage your referral and provide your patient with timely access to our services.
Once the necessary referral information has been collated, please refer your patient via the relevant pathway below.

We accept GP and specialist referrals.
ROUTINE outpatient clinic referrals
Routine outpatient clinic referrals are triaged by our medical staff.
For routine referrals:
Submit an eReferral using a HealthLink smart form, this can either be done from your practice management software or using the My HealthLink Portal
- Register to HealthLink or call 1800 125 036
- Click NSW Health Outpatient referrals – Western Sydney LHD and follow the prompts (see image below)
- Healthlink is also used to send eye tests to Service NSW for driving tests

URGENT referrals
For urgent referrals:

Submit an eReferral using a HealthLink smart form, this can either be done from your practice management software or using the My HealthLink Portal. More information on eReferrals can be found here.

once you have submitted your referral, please contact the clinic on (02) 8890 6668 and ask the Nurse Team Leader to progress the referral
EMERGENCY referrals
For emergency referrals either:

phone the Westmead Hospital switchboard on (02) 8890 5555 and ask for the Ophthalmology Registrar On Call

ask the patient to present to the Westmead Hospital Emergency Department
