Head of Neonatology

Dr Melissa Luig  [MBBS(Syd); Dip.Paeds(UNSW); MHL(Syd); FRACP]  is Head of Neonatology and Senior Staff Specialist. Melissa has worked in Sydney in neonatology and paediatrics for more than 20 years, and has been a specialist at Westmead since 2004. Her background includes extensive experience in neonatal and paediatric retrieval medicine and developmental follow-up of high risk graduates of the neonatal intensive care unit. More recently, she has developed an interest in health law.

Dr Luig co-directs the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit [NICU] alongside the Nurse Manager. Her long term vision for newborn care at Westmead is as a leading centre for excellence in clinical care no matter whether your baby is well or critically ill, sought after training opportunities, innovative teaching methods for multidisciplinary teams including simulation technology, and answering important questions through clinical and benchtop research.

Dr Pranav Jani

Dr Pranav Jani specialist profiles image

Dr Pranav Jani  [FRACP, MD (Paeds), CCPU (Neonatal), M Clin Epid, MBBS]  is a Staff Specialist in the Department of Neonatology at Westmead Hospital. Dr Jani speaks English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and is currently pursuing a higher research qualification (PhD) in Medicine from The University of Sydney and investigating use of Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy for point of care monitoring of preterm infants.

Dr Daphne D’Cruz

Dr Daphne D’Cruz  [MBBS, DCH,FRACP, MMed (Clinical Epidemiology)]  is a staff specialist at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Westmead Hospital and a Master of Medicine in clinical epidemiology University of Sydney with a special interest in neonatal medicine is neurodevelopmental follow up of babies from NICU.

Dr D'Cruz graduated from Calicut Medical College, India and attained a DCH from St John’s Medical College, Bangalore. She speaks Malayalam, Hindi and English.

Dr Dharmesh Shah

Dr Dharmesh Shah  [MBBS, MD, DM, FRACP]  is a Staff Specialist at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Westmead Hospital, qualified in neonatal functional cardiac echocardiography, and a lecturer with University of Sydney, teaching medical students, registrars, neonatology fellows and nursing staff. Dr Shah has a keen interest in clinical research with multiple publications in peer review journals. Dr Shah's current research is on neonatal resuscitation of extremely preterm infants in delivery suite.

Dr Rajesh Maheshwari

Rajesh Maheshwari [MBBS MD FRACP CCPU (Neonatal) MPhil (USyd)] is a staff specialist in neonatology at Westmead Hospital and Clinical lecturer with the University of Sydney. Dr Maheshwari's clinical and research interests include neonatal mask ventilation, thermoregulation, neonatal nutrition, neonatal functional echocardiography and patient safety and quality issues.

Dr Jan Klimek

Dr Jan Klimek  [MBChB, DA, DCH, MRCPCH, FRACP, CCPU (Neonatal)]  is a senior staff specialist neonatologist in the NICU at Westmead Hospital and clinical lecturer for the University of Sydney. Dr Klimek has worked in paediatrics and neonatology in a number of countries; staff specialist at Westmead since 2010. At Westmead Hospital Dr Klimek does much of the teaching of his medical colleagues in neonatal ultrasound towards the CCPU certificate.
