Resources for Culturally & Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Families

Welcome to our Multicultural and Multilingual Information pages. Women’s & Newborn Health Westmead Hospital understand that moving to a new country and a different culture can be a huge challenge for families, especially if you do not speak the local language. We want to work with you to get the best health care for you and your family.

At Westmead hospital, we are proud of the services provided to all our women and their families and hope that we can continue to grow and learn with our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) women to meet the needs of women and families in the WSLHD .

Health Care Interpreter Services

We have the Health Care Interpreter Service (HCIS) to assist you and your family when talking with health care providers. When booking an appointment please let the clerks know you require an interpreter. Remind your doctor to write on your referral that you will need an interpreter.

By using the Health Care Interpreter Service we know you will get the correct medical information. You can be confident that everything that the health care provider says will be translated to you. We know that family care for you but sometimes they may misunderstand information or not know the correct translation for complicated medical information. The Health Care Interpreter Service staff are trained and assessed to safely translate medical information so you can be confident in making informed decisions about your health care.

Our Interpreters are available in over 120 languages and dialects as well as Auslan for those with a hearing impairment. To see if your language is available, you can visit Health Care Interpreter Service available languages on our website.

If a face-to-face interpreter cannot be provided for your appointment, we can arrange a telephone interpreter any time of the day, 7 days a week. So if you need an interpreter, let us know.

If you need help to contact us, you can call the Translating and Interpreting Services on 131 450.

We are excited and pleased you have chosen to have your baby at Westmead Hospital and look forward to helping you in your pregnancy, birth and parenthood journey. Here at Westmead Hospital, more than 60% of our women birthing have come from non-english speaking countries, largely North East Asian and south East Asian countries.

The women that attend tell us how helpful and how much they have enjoyed these sessions. Not only do they help prepare you for birth and parenting but they allow you to make friendships and community connections.
