Routine growth assessments include measuring the height and weight of children (birth to 16 years) in NSW Health facilities. Increasing parental awareness of children’s weight status is an important first step in providing healthy lifestyle support for families.

As a Health professional you can:

Assess

  • Assess the child’s height, weight and weight status
  • Ask about the family lifestyle and behaviours

Advise

  • Show the parent where their child is on the BMI for age chart
  • Discuss the concept of a healthy weight, and potential impacts of being above a healthy weight
  • Use positive, non-judgemental language
  • Provide healthy lifestyle key messages using clear, practical, family-focused examples

Assist

  • Discuss in more detail what the family and child can do together to maintain a healthier lifestyle
  • Focus on supporting healthy behaviours and positive lifestyle habits
  • Assist the family to consider their options and set achievable goals

Arrange

  • Ongoing assistance and support
  • Refer to Go4Fun or other family-focused lifestyle management services
