Closing the health gap for Aboriginal people
You are here:
Historically, Aboriginal children had lower rates and delays of vaccinations than non-Aboriginal children. These gaps in vaccination uptake and timeliness put Aboriginal children at increased risk of complications and death from vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs). This relates to data for notifiable diseases showing Aboriginal children have higher rates of VPDs.
One of NSW Health strategies to improve immunisation timeliness and coverage among Aboriginal children was employment of Aboriginal Immunisation Health Workers (AIHW) in each LHD. Starting 2013 Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) employed its first AIHW.
AIHW works closely with the local Aboriginal Community, immunisation providers, government and non-government organisations to support parents and careers in the timely vaccination of their children.
