About Women's Health outpatient physiotherapy services
Aims of treatment
Women's health outpatient physiotherapy treatment focuses on:
- maintaining and restoring normal function
- minimising dysfunction
- preventing disability
- improving quality of life.
Who are these services for?
- women with pelvic floor dysfunction and incontinence
- women with pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain and lower back pain
- pregnant and postnatal women requiring hydrotherapy.
Referral requirements
- all patients must have a written referral requesting outpatient physiotherapy treatment
- patients must be 15 years of age or over
- if patients do not have a Medicare card (e.g. if they are an overseas visitor) a fee will be charged
- if the patient lives outside the Hills, Holroyd or Parramatta local government areas and there is no suitable provider in your area, the following referrals will be accepted:
- hydrotherapy classes
- pelvic floor dysfunction or continence training.

Pregnancy related physiotherapy
Who is this service for?
Women experiencing pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain and lower back pain and who require musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
Referrals
- this service is available for pregnant women in Western Sydney Local Health District by referral of a midwife or doctor
- all referrals will be assessed for urgency and suitability for physiotherapy.
Continence & pelvic floor muscle dysfunction physiotherapy
Who is this service for?
Women with incontinence and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. Services are provided on an individual basis.
Referrals & appointments
- a medical referral is required
- referrals are triaged based on urgency and women are offered appointments as they become available. There is a waiting list for this service
- the physiotherapy department will telephone the patient to advise of appointment details. A letter will then be sent to confirm the appointment.
Continence education classes
What is the aim of these classes?
The classes are conducted by a continence physiotherapist and dietitian and aim to increase understanding of continence and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.
Class details
When: classes are held on the Thursday of every second month from 1.30pm to 3.30pm
Where: Westmead Education & Conference Centre (WECC) on level 2, Westmead Hospital
Cancellations
If you cannot attend an appointment please advise us immediately. Please call reception on 02 8890 6500 to rebook your appointment.
If you call out of hours you can leave a message. We will then phone you back during business hours to arrange a new appointment time.
If you do not attend your appointment and you have not advised the physiotherapy department, we may discharge you from our service and notify your referring doctor.
