Westmead Hospital physiotherapy geriatric medicine patients

Physiotherapy at Westmead Hospital

Inpatient services - geriatric medicine service

A team of three physiotherapists and two therapy assistants provides physiotherapy services to the acute geriatric ward (D4C) and the geriatric rehab ward (C4C). The team manages a clinical workload consisting of both acute and rehab patients. On the rehab ward, a multidisciplinary team approach is essential.

Patient therapy and exercise programs

Patients are encouraged to participate in group therapy each week day, with three of these groups being exercise classes led by the physio team. There are also individual or group gym sessions conducted for each patient and we strive to have a minimum of two physio sessions a day per patient. To encourage family participation in a patient's rehabilitation, each patient has an individualised exercise programme to complete with their families whenever they visit. Over the weekends it is expected that these exercises will be completed two-three times.

Student placements

Throughout the year, 3rd and 4th year University of Sydney students participate in their rehab clinical placements in geriatric rehab. Work experience students also intermittently observe on our wards.
