Respiratory medicine physiotherapy service
The respiratory medicine physiotherapy team covers the general respiratory wards and medical high dependency unit (HDU) of Westmead Hospital.
A respiratory physiotherapy service is provided to the emergency department, day only and recovery wards upon request. The goal of physiotherapy review in this clinical area is to optimise lung function and to restore or maintain mobility of inpatients.
Numerous outpatient clinics for respiratory conditions are also attended where physiotherapy assessment and treatment is provided.
The physiotherapy department also provides an outpatient service to patients with chronic lung disease. This service includes the assessment of patients and the prescription of treatment including long-term, self-management strategies. This service is accessible via a written referral from a respiratory physician.
General surgery physiotherapy service
The general surgery physiotherapy team covers the general surgery wards and surgical high dependency unit (HDU) of Westmead Hospital. The goal of physiotherapy review in this clinical area is to optimise lung function and to restore or maintain mobility of inpatients following surgical procedures.
Intensive care unit (E3A/B) physiotherapy service
Physiotherapy services are also provided to the intensive care unit. The Westmead Hospital intensive care unit is a general ICU where patients are admitted with a wide range of conditions including post-surgery, orthopaedic injuries, neurological injuries, acute medical and organ failures, and post trauma injuries. Most patients are intubated and ventilated.
