About the Department
The Oral Medicine Department is a Specialist Department within the Westmead Centre for Oral Health that diagnoses and provides non-surgical management of diseases affecting the mouth.
These can include chronic ulcers, blisters, polyps, mass lesions, complex pain syndromes and cancers.
We care for patients with medical conditions that are best managed in a hospital setting. The Department is also the main training site for Oral Medicine Specialists in New South Wales.

Information for clinicians
Oral Medicine looks after non-surgical management of disorders and conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region, in particular oral mucosal disease and orofacial pain, as well as the oral health care of medically complex patients.
The Oral Medicine Department is a tertiary referral centre. Referrals to the department must include the following information:
- Referring Clinician’s contact details

Patient’s name and date of birth
- Patient’s contact details including mobile phone and email address.
- Medicare card number
- Health Care or Pension Care card number

A medical history summary, detailed descriptions of the dental condition and malocclusion, radiographs, results of any previous investigations, and clinical photographs are also strongly recommended.
