Australia Day honour for Westmead Hospital's Jay Chandra

Westmead Hospital’s Dr Jay Chandra has received a prestigious Australia Day honour.

On Tuesday, he received a Member of the Order (AM) for his work as an ophthalmologist and to the international community through eye care programs.

Dr Chandra has been the head of vitreoretinal surgery at Westmead Hospital since the unit opened in 1985.

In 2002, Dr Chandra was in remote India doing a presentation about his voluntary work on alleviating blindness when he was approached by the Nepean Division of General Practice chief executive.

As a result, the Fiji Eye Project was founded in 2005.

This team has performed 1000 cataract surgeries for people who would otherwise be blind because they could not afford the operation.
