As part of Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals Expansion Project, the arts and cultural program was established to shape the design of the new hospital facilities.

The program, now in its third year, has helped create a built environment that is patient-focused, engages the community, and conveys a sense of belonging, pride and confidence in the hospital's services.

Over 500 community members, staff and artists, including eight specially trained multilingual community champions, contributed to the development of the program, which integrates the community-inspired art and design elements into the hospital's facilities.

The extensive community involvement undertaken has ensured that the hospital design acknowledges the very significant local Aboriginal community, while reflecting the extraordinary multicultural diversity of the Blacktown area.

These innovative collaborations have created an environment that allows creative thinking while at the same time keeping fundamentally to the requirements of a health care facility.
