Needle and Syringe Program

The Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) is an evidence based public health program that aims to prevent the transmission of blood borne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis C amongst People who Inject Drugs (PWID).

The NSP is a free and confidential service that provides a range of injecting equipment in a variety of different settings including over the counter, automatic vending machines, internal dispensing chutes and outreach. NSP outlets also provide sharps disposal bins, safe sex equipment (condoms and lube), accepts needle returns, engages in needle clean-up and provides an NSP outreach service.

Our primary outlets

Provide sterile injecting equipment and sharps disposal services.

Skilled NSP workers deliver health education and health promotion through brief interventions in these settings as well as providing referral to other health, welfare and community services.

Our secondary outlets

Provides sterile injecting equipment as part of other services within a health or community centre.

NSP staff within secondary outlets provide a limited range of injecting equipment, provide sharps disposal services and facilitate referrals to primary NSP outlets.

NSP secondary outlets in Western Sydney Local Health District include:

Automatic dispensing machines (ADMs)

Provide 24 hour, 7 day a week access to sterile injecting equipment.

ADMs dispense Fitpacks which serve as a sharps disposal bins at a cost of $1-$3. 

NSP 24/7 automatic dispensing machines are located at:

Internal dispensing chutes (IDCs)

Provide 24 hour, 7 day a week access to a limited range of free sterile injecting equipment.

IDCs dispense Fitpacks which serve as a sharps disposal bin for free.

Outreach NSP

Injecting equipment and sharps disposal bins are dispensed through an outreach service on Wednesday afternoons between 1:30-3pm.

Outreach NSP services Parramatta, Blacktown, Mount Druitt and surrounding areas.

Outreach orders must be placed by Tuesday afternoons on 1800 721 733 and an NSP Worker will confirm a delivery time.
