All of our laboratories at REN, WSLHD were built as PC2 capable and most are certified as PC2 laboratories by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator for working with genetically modified organisms, as well as standard laboratory and clinical specimens/samples.

Within the REN Building we also have several facilities available to support our laboratory, clinical and translational research. These are:

  • Mammalian tissue/cell culture facilities including facilities for primary cell cultures, continuous cell lines and testing cytotoxic agents /therapeutics and drug screening.
  • Super /high speed refrigerated centrifuges for sample separations.
  • Digital fluorescent light microscopy.

REN has a high speed and throughput automated Immunohistochemistry slide stainer, intelliPATH FLX, to that performs reliable and consistent IHC staining that closely mimics manual staining methods, as well as simultaneous multiplex IHC staining.

WSLHD is as an active partner of Westmead Research Hub (WRH). WSLHD researchers are able to access the world- class cutting edge core research facilities and technologies of the WRH.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scanning and other medical imaging facilities at Westmead Hospital can be used for research purposes by arrangement.

The Western Clinical School at Blacktown houses a DEXA scanner (Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) for the determination of body composition and bone density.

WSLHD also has facilities to facilitate the development of pre-clinical research models.
