Professor Nicholas Manolios is involved with clinical service to Westmead Hospital, administration, teaching and research within the department. Special research interests are in (i) structure and assembly of the T–cell antigen receptor. In particular, the role of the T-cell receptors in the predisposition and causation of auto–immune and inflammatory rheumatic disorders; (ii) Structure–function relationships of T cell assembly and T–cell activation; (iii) Drug design on new synthetic peptides that may be used as therapeutic agents to suppress inflammation; and (iv) Drug delivery using nanoparticle technology. Recent interest has been marijuana and cannabinoid analogue effects on arthritis.

Associate Professor Peter Wong started in this Department in Feb 2019 after 11 years practice in Coffs Harbour, NSW where he helped establish the first Fracture Prevention Clinic and first Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Service in regional Australia. He completed a PhD at the WEHI/Melbourne University in 2006 looking at the molecular biology of inflammatory arthritis and bone disease and holds a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Newcastle University. He has particular expertise in biologic treatment of inflammatory arthritis, osteoporosis, pulmonary arterial hypertension and point-of-care US. Current research interests include the use of musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound (US) in improving medication adherence, assessment of osteoporosis refracture prevention models of care, bone health in men commencing androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer and vaccination in patients commencing b/tsDMARDS. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Sydney Medical School; MD Research Coordinator at the Westmead Clinical School; and Conjoint Associate Professor in the UNSW Rural Clinical School. Recently appointed as Honorary Medical Director, Healthy Bones Australia (formerly, Osteoporosis Australia).

Dr Cai is a staff specialist at Westmead and Auburn Hospitals where he provides inpatient and outpatient clinic services. He is the clinical lead of the Osteoarthritis Chronic Care Program for Western Sydney Local Health District. Research interests include crystal arthritis, the development of core domain sets in rheumatology trials and the use of large datasets for medical research. Dr Cai maintains a keen interest in medical education and participates in the weekly departmental professional development activities.

Dr David Spencer has been a VMO at Westmead Hospital since 1979. He provides consultative services for the patients visiting the University Clinics and for inpatients.  He participates in professional development within the department through registrar training, journal club, peer review meetings, in-service lectures, and participation of clinical trials. Research interests are in the genetic basis of rheumatic diseases, therapeutic intervention in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.

Dr Howe is an Emeritus Consultant Rheumatologist to Westmead Hospital. He is involved with ongoing clinical trials, research, and clinical support of the department through registrar training, peer meetings and case reviews and student teaching. He has a private practice in Westmead. Interests in rheumatology include inflammatory diseases, teaching, computer based records, and use of computers in medicine.

Dr Haesung Bak is a Visiting Medical Officer to Westmead Hospital and provides inpatient and outpatient clinic services for complex rheumatology cases.  He is involved with ongoing research and provides clinical support to the department through peer meetings and case reviews, ward rounds, journal club, lectures, clinical trials.  He has rooms in Burwood, Baulkham Hills, Penrith and Lithgow.

Dr Wendy Lau is a Visiting Medical Officer to Westmead Hospital. She provides inpatient services, and an outpatient clinic for patients with acute and chronic back pain through University Clinics. She is involved in student and junior medical staff teaching, and participates in the department’s professional development activities. She is a Clinical Lecturer at Sydney Medical School (Westmead), University of Sydney. She is currently undertaking a PhD through The George Institute for Global Health, UNSW.

Dr Beverly Ng is a Rheumatology Consultant at Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals. She completed Rheumatology advanced training in New South Wales, in addition to a Clinical Research Fellowship at Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge, UK). She is currently pursuing research exploring the role of the microbiome in relation to treatment response in patients with psoriatic arthritis. She is also actively involved in teaching junior doctors and medical students.

Jason is a first-year Rheumatology registrar. He graduated from medicine at the University of New South Wales. He has a strong interest in rural and Aboriginal health. He was a Rural Doctor's Network cadet and completed junior medical officer training in the Central West of NSW. He completed Basic Physician training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He enjoys teaching medical students and junior medical officers.

Dr Natasha Ung is a second-year Rheumatology registrar. She has worked at a variety of hospitals in both SA and NSW following completion of her medical degree at the University of Adelaide. She completed Basic Physician Training at St Vincent’s Hospital and is currently dual training in both Rheumatology and General Medicine. Her research interests include mental health in lupus, and the COVID19 impact on rheumatology. She is involved with the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance. In addition, she is passionate about teaching and mentoring having had various appointments and involvements with the Royal Australian College of Physicians, University of New South Wales, University of Western Sydney and University of Sydney.

Dr Masnammany is a Malaysian trained physician and a final year Rheumatology fellow most recently from Selayang Hospital, Malaysia. He has joined our department as a Visiting Clinical Fellow for a period of 1 year (October 2021- September 2022).

Natalia is the Coordinator of the Osteoarthritis Chronic Care Program (OACCP) for Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). Her background is in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, primarily in the areas of outpatients, emergency medicine and complex chronic care. Natalia is responsible for the overall implementation, coordination, outcome data management and administration of the OACCP. Her role includes providing clinical advice and consultancy to other health care professionals and is focused to ensure the ongoing evaluation and success of the OACCP.

Nicole is the GLA:D certified OACCP Physiotherapist for the WSLHD. Her role involves delivering an individualised care plan, including education, gym sessions/hydrotherapy- to patients who have hip and/or knee OA and are from the TKR/THR waitlists. Nicole is also a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, and is investigating the effects of gait retraining interventions in reducing medial knee joint load for individuals with medial knee OA. Her interests involve gait biomechanics, evidence-based OA management and load modification strategies to reduce hip and knee OA progression. Nicole is also the recipient of the Westmead Charitable Grant for Allied Health Career Development 2021.

Annemarie is our clinical trial co-ordinator. Her role includes trial application and liaising with trial facilitators to ensure studies are run to protocol. Annemarie has also experience working as biologics nurse in the outpatient clinic, where she educated patients and provided resources in use of their biological medication.

Cinda Lam is a registered nurse with an interest in clinical research. Cinda has just been appointed as one of the Clinical Trials Coordinators in our Department.
