Medicine and Cancer Research banner

The Sydney West Radiation Oncology Network (SWRON) comprises radiation treatment departments in Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre Westmead, Blacktown Cancer and Haematology Centre and Nepean Cancer Care Centre.

The SWRON research group has existing research links with external institutions such as the University of Sydney (Prof Paul Keall, Prof Annette Haworth), Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG) and other collaborative cancer research groups. Our research plan focusses on five themes, with contacts in these areas listed:

  • To implement advanced radiation treatment techniques through ongoing technical research, e.g. LARK and SPARK trials which investigate real time tracking of implanted fiducial markers to aid in the precision of delivery of stereotactic radiotherapy for prostate and liver cancer. Mr Shan Yau
  • To integrate radiotherapy with novel systemic agents, e.g. RIPINIVO and KEYNOTE trials investigating potential synergistic effect of combining radiotherapy and immunotherapy for the treatment melanoma and head and neck cancer. Dr Tim Wang
  • Radiobiology and basic cancer biology research through the establishment of a radiobiology research lab at Westmead Institute for Medical Research. Dr Eric Hau
  • Ongoing projects focussing on data mining. Dr Jonathan Sykes Collection of high quality patient outcomes data including patient reported outcomes. Dr Puma Sundaresan
