The REN Grants for 2022

WSLHD Research & Education Network Grant Scheme for 2022

The Research and Education Network (REN) of the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is pleased to announce the 2022 round of its internal competitive research funding scheme, which is open to all researchers employed across the LHD.

The goal of this scheme is to foster a culture of clinical and translational research by clinicians in all disciplines and at all levels; and to assist with the career development and future external funding opportunities for clinician-researchers.  Research workers whose work is located principally in the community or in relation to public health should feel free to apply.

$300,000 is available for grants up to $50,000. Each grant will have a duration of up to 12 months.

We plan again this year that at least one grant will be awarded to a project led from Auburn Hospital and at least one led from Blacktown-Mt Druitt Hospital.

The grants are offered in three investigator categories (note: these criteria relate to the investigator’s previous competitive grant income, not the proposed project, or years of research experience).

  1. New Investigator Project – for staff new to research who have obtained little or no previous research funding (those with previous funding under a total of $5,000).

  2. Early-Mid career Investigator Project – for staff who have experience in research and obtained limited previous research funding. [those with previous funding of $5,000 - $100,000 total]

  3. Established investigator Project – for established researchers with a research funding track record and a project for which pilot data or similar will support a future grant application (those with previous funding  over $100,000 total]

A two-stage application process will apply. The first stage is an Expression of Interest [EOI] (this form). The EOIs will be assessed by the WSLHD Research Management Committee and several full applications then invited, which will be reviewed by the WSLHD Scientific Advisory Committee.

Expressions of Interest Close: Monday 8 November 2021 at 5pm.

The Westmead Fellowship for 2022

The Westmead Fellowship for 2022

Fostering and enhancing research excellence

Applications are now open for the prestigious Westmead Fellowship, commencing 2022. This Fellowship will provide three years’ salary support of $150,000 pa and is available to early and mid-career researchers to undertake research at Westmead Hospital or elsewhere within Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). A clinician-researcher will use these funds to secure protected research time (at least 50%). Funds can also be used to hire research staff to expand the research project.

The scheme aims to support outstanding applicants to build a solid career foundation, establish their own research group at Westmead or elsewhere within WSLHD and go on to attract future external funding.

Both existing Westmead/WSLHD researchers and external applicants are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

  • PhD (or doctoral equivalent) graduates who are 1-7 years postdoc (Early Career Researchers - ECR) or 8-15 years (Mid-Career researchers - MCR)
  • Have applied or are planning to apply for external ECR or MCR fellowship support
  • Competitive track record, relative to opportunity
  • Evidence of upward career trajectory
  • A clear vision for growing their research program
  • A clear vision for how their program integrates with current WSLHD research

Given that the current COVID crisis continues and the intense workload on all WSLHD staff it has been decided to cancel the WSLHD Kickstarter round for this year.
We expect these grants should open again in mid-July 2022.
