Courses

SiLECT offers several simulation based programs and courses for Medical, Nursing and Allied Health staff. These programs are delivered within the simulation centre as well as in the ward or speciality environment.

ACTS is a four hour intensive program with a focus on the latest teaching in advanced life support, local clinical guidelines and management of commonly faced emergencies. The emphasis is how to apply the skills in real life crisis situations, whilst examining the common skills essential for effective teamwork.

The Advanced Life Support course is a two day multidisciplinary program. The program focusses on developing both the technical and non-technical skills required to manage the acutely unwell deteriorating patient. The program consists of didactic, skill stations and high fidelity simulation sessions. This is a WSLHD program which complies with ALS guidelines but is not a nationally recognised program though it is recognised by some medical colleges.

My Health Learning course code: Adult Advanced Life Support (ANADLIFESU)

Designed to complement the Westmead ALS Team Training course, ALS on the Run is an insitu run program which involves simulated ALS calls run in a range of varying clinical and non-clinical locations around the hospital. These simulations aim to improve multidisciplinary teamwork, hospital processes and patient outcomes.

Allied Health DETECT is a 1.5 hour program targeted at Allied Health. The course provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills related to the identification and management of the deteriorating patient. A major theme is working within a team and communication.

This program builds on the 4 hour face to face DETECT program. It aims to promote a consistent delivery method for education focusing on DETECT (Detecting Deterioration, Evaluation, Treatment, Escalation and Communicating in teams) principles. All sessions aim to consolidate and expand current CN/ME, CN/MS skills and knowledge as well as encourage the use of simulation within ward based education plans.

Designed to address neonatal resuscitation and obstetric emergencies. The two day FONT course follows DETECT principals with a focus on the correct assessment tools used to ensure appropriate management of foetal and maternal welfare. Mandated by the Ministry of Health this course covers common obstetric emergencies and basic mother and neonate resuscitation skills utilising didactic, skills stations and simulation.

This one day program follows on from the Simulation Instructor Development Course. Fundamentals of Debriefing aims to build upon the participants skills in the delivery of simulation based education by introducing the concept of Debriefing. Debriefing is widely accepted as a vital component of simulation based learning and an essential skill for any educator utilising this modality to provide a safe and effective learning environment.

This one day program has been a designed as an introduction to the basic skills required to effectively utilise Simulated Learning Environments. This program aims to provide the participant with the basic skills required to safely utilise or participate in the delivery of Simulation Based Training. These skills include an understanding of educational theory, scenario design, simulation fidelity, debriefing skills and learner objectives. This program is delivered as part of a strategy to increase simulated learning capacity across the LHD.

SOTR is a one hour program delivered insitu within available in-service timeframes. Sim on the Run (SOTR) provides simulation based educational sessions for all members of staff across all disciplines, in their day-to-day working environment. Scenarios are customised for each ward and may include, management of a deteriorating patient focusing on DETECT principals, communication, teamwork as well as ALS/BLS roles and techniques and in response to identified deficits and adverse patient outcomes.

STAR is a 10 week refresher program with a focus on the latest teaching in advanced life support, local clinical guidelines and management of commonly faced emergencies. The emphasis is how to apply the skills in real life crisis situations, whilst examining the common skills essential for effective teamwork.

The Trauma Team Training (TTT) course is a one-day multidisciplinary simulation based course that addressed teamwork skills and clinical practice relevant to trauma team response. This is a course developed by the NSW Institute of Trauma Injury Management modified for delivery across WSLHD. The course focuses on the principals of human factors and team communication in the context of evidence based trauma management. Trauma in this context being seriously injured patients and not psychological injury.
