DETECT Junior

Overview:
DETECT Junior comprises three components, a manual, e-learning and face to face training, which provide key information on how to perform a systematic patient assessment (Detecting deterioration); identify the early and late warning signs of deterioration in a patient (Evaluation); provide simple and timely interventions ; manage deterioration (Treatment); escalate appropriately (Escalation); communicate effectively as a team member (Communicating in Teams)
The eLearning component and participant training covers all learning outcomes outlined in the BTF curriculum.

Resus4Kids

Overview:
Resus4Kids Short Practical Course (90 mins) and eLearning component (90 mins) RESUS4KlDS is a paediatric life support training program for health care rescuers who may be involved in the initial resuscitation of an infant or child in respiratory or cardiac arrest The course is generic and designed for an interdisciplinary audience including medical and nursing students, paramedics, practicing doctors and nurses and allied health workers By the end of the 90 minute practical course participants will be able to:
  • Explain why good TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION are essential for optimal outcomes in resuscitation (use names, allocate and accept roles)
  • Manage an infant or child’s AIRWAY (opens and clears the airway and maintains it open)
  • Perform effective BREATHING (slow breaths with chest rise)
  • Demonstrate effective minimal interruption cardiac COMPRESSIONS (push hard, push fast, allow full chest recoil)
  • Recognise and provide initial management of shockable and non-shockable cardiac RHYTHMS
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe DEFIBRILLATION

 

Target Audience:
All staff working with paediatrics.

Overview

The Australian Resuscitation Council Advanced Life support Level 2 (ALS2) is a standardised national course for healthcare professionals. All applicants must hold a professional healthcare qualification and current clinical or healthcare educational appointment. The course is very intense and prior clinical knowledge and experience of critically ill patients is essential.

This course offers training in recognising, managing and escalating maternal and neonatal emergencies including deteriorating patient, shoulder dystocia, PPH, preeclampsia and breech presentation. CRASH (Critical III Assessment, Stabilisation and Holistic Care)

This course is only available to WSLHD staff only

Overview
These cases have been designed as a means to focus learning on common clinical scenarios involving the acutely deteriorating patient.  They have been developed to resemble clinical cases that candidates may be asked to assess and manage.  All cases underscore the importance of teamwork and in general are fun using a multidisciplinary format.
The content of the cases is a reflection of local clinical experience, with input arising from:
  • Reviews of common Rapid Response Calls and Clinical Review calls
  • IIMS
  • Critical and Sentinel Incidents
  • Common critical scenarios involving high risk procedures
  • Rare clinical events that have demonstrated a high propensity to miscommunication and significant judgement variance.

STATUS (Skills Training & Assessment Techniques Using Simulation)

This course is only available to WSLHD staff only

Overview
These series of short courses have been designed to incorporate underpinning knowledge of nursing clinical skills, professional practice and provision of clinical care within the national competency standards NSW Health and Local Health District Policies/Procedures and Competencies.
The use of simulation will assist with the skills training of nurses and midwives in a safe environment.  Allowing for classroom styled teaching combined with a simulated patient environment to assess and reflect on the provision and coordination of point of care nursing practice in alignment with National Competency Standards.
This is a 60 minute simulation based course designed to reinforce the basics of nursing using simulation. It is a skill based course using manikins. The aim is to improve nursing skills and relate them back to the patient. There are 6 planned sessions including:
  • A-E assessment
  • Hemodynamic monitoring
  • Rhythm interpretation
  • Chest X-Ray interpretation/NG insertion
  • Accessing PICC, IVC lines
  • Non Invasive Ventilation
  • Oxygen therapy
