Westmead Hospital

Westmead Hospital is a tertiary referral hospital in western Sydney and is part of the largest hospital complex in the southern hemisphere. With over 800 beds, it is a level 1 trauma centre and provides expertise in all fields of medical care, serving a population of over 1.5 million people. Westmead is also a major teaching hospital of the University of Sydney.


Westmead Emergency Department

Westmead's Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Australia with a diverse casemix and high acuity patient load. The ED sees ~80,000 adult patients annually and is supported by specialist services including 24/7 interventional cardiology, trauma, neurosurgery, stroke service, cardiothoracic surgery, dental & toxicology.

Our goal is to maintain standards in clinical excellence and a safe environment for patients, friends & relatives and staff. We are dedicated to education and research in emergency medicine and advancement of our critical care specialty.

When you arrive at Westmead Emergency, you will be looked after by a team of doctors, nurses and support staff working around the clock and striving to deliver a world class emergency health service. Westmead Emergency is one of the busiest departments in NSW with a challenging casemix and an annual census of ~80,000. The ED has full accreditation by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for advanced medical training in emergency medicine. The ED is staffed by a dedicated specialist team of doctors, nurses and allied health staff.

The Emergency Medicine Research Unit within our ED promotes quality and excellence in emergency care. The EMRU has a strong focus in education, evidence-based emergency medicine and research activities. Our ED has had a recently completed major redevelopment, including a new Urgent Care Centre, 4 new resuscitation rooms, and an early treatment zone.

About Us

Our ED has recently moved into a new building complex consisting of 6 resuscitation beds, 25 acute beds, 24 bed short stay unit, 8 bed older person unit, 8 bed Covid unit including a front of house treatment space and an urgent care centre.

We have access to allied health (Social worker, physiotherapist & occupational therapist) 7 days/week, mental health clinical nurse consultants 16 hours/day (7 days/week) and we have nurse practitioner cover 12 hours/day (7 days/week)

The Children’s Hospital Westmead Emergency Department is co-located upstairs to the Adult department.
