There is protected mandatory teaching every Wednesday and Thursday between 13:00hrs and 14:00hrs in the Seminar Room on level 3 of Western Sydney University (Blacktown), or by videoconference from the Mt Druitt Conference Room. This time is pager free and pagers should be handed in prior to the session commencing. Lunch is provided prior to the sessions.
Additional mandatory teaching is provided at Mt Druitt on alternate Tuesdays in either the Conference Room or Rehabilitation Hub Meeting Room on level 1.
Attendance to the protected mandatory teaching sessions is tracked and reported to DPETs.
The formal JMO teaching program instils a lesson in lifelong learning by encouraging you to set aside time in the context of clinical demands for your own professional development. This time may also allow for a quick catch up with colleagues outside of the clinical space, and with the DPETs, if required.
The ALS1 course is offered to interns at a subsidised rate and is on a “First – in Best – dressed” basis as places are limited. This course, run by the AIMSi Centre, is internationally recognised and valid for four years. At least 5 sessions are held each year. In addition, ALS2 courses are offered through the year.
It is mandatory for all Interns to attend the Critically Ill Assessment, Stabilisation & Holistic Care (CRASH) workshop at least once during their PGY1 year. The CRASH workshop is run by the AIMSi Centre and resembles clinical cases in a simulated multidisciplinary setting. These are scheduled in place of a regular Wednesday or Thursday teaching session, and RSVPs are required as places at each session are limited.
Careers and information nights are also held during the year, as well as training sessions on CV writing and interview skills.
The Medical Education Support Officer (MESO) is the first point of contact for any education/teaching matters and works across both hospitals. There is a Director of Prevocational Education & Training (DPET) for each site; one for Blacktown Hospital and one for Mount Druitt Hospital. If you have any difficulties getting away from your team please let the relevant DPET know. Also if you have any suggestions for different topics or improvements to the education program please contact the DPETs directly.
