Committed to Education

Westmead Research banner

The Research and Education Network’s (REN) purpose is to support integrating research and education as critical elements in the provision of optimal clinical care. This creates an environment where new knowledge and skills are valued highly to the benefit of patients and the community, and are attractive to high calibre academics, clinical staff and students.

REN is instrumental in supporting WSLHD to develop research and education capability in the clinical environment by strengthening infrastructure, and supporting information systems. It also supports research and education development, procurement of research and education resources and recruitment of excellent research and education staff.

REN is based in the Research & Education Network Building on the Westmead Hospital Campus. However, the network itself comprises sites and facilities based elsewhere on the Westmead and other campuses.

REN Facilities

The Facilities listed below form the major part of the Research & Education Network.

They are available to research staff and their students, and aim to provide a secure, safe and collaborative atmosphere for research and education work to be conducted by encouraging meaningful interaction between research and education groups.

To meet this promise, REN provides the following key facilities:
  • WECC. A modern Education and Conference centre with a range of rooms from small tutorial rooms to a large auditorium; flat and tiered teaching spaces; collaborative study spaces; and various forms of audiovisual and video conferencing technology can be made available by request
  • Library. Our Library has been comprehensively refurbished and is now available to users with a full and new range of traditional and electronic library services.
  • Westmead SIM School. Provides education to nursing students enrolled in applicable education programs in an up-to-date learning environment which simulates real-world patient care situations.
  • REN Building. Provides facilities for both wet and dry laboratory research activities in a freshly refurbished building, fully equipped with core equipment and facilities to meet most needs. The building also provides two meeting rooms and a large training room suitable for classes up to 16 participants. The REN Building also forms the base for the Research & Education Network executive team and associated services.
  • REN Building Common Areas. These are common areas that are available for use by all staff and WSLHD students at REN. These areas include shared “New Ways Of Working” office spaces, toilets, showers, disabled access facilities, lunch room with refrigerator and appliances, ‘hot desks’ with PC’s, and a courtyard with seating and shade. Access to lockers for staff and students by arrangement through the Facility Manager (for permanent Staff), or Education Program Coordinator (for Students)..
