The Library is committed to evidence-based practice and lifelong learning and, in addition to services provided in the Library, also offers a ‘roaming librarian’ service to embed training and research assistance into clinical areas.

Facilities at Westmead Hospital Library have been recently upgraded by the University of Sydney, in partnership with the Western Sydney Local Health District. The refurbishment provides a contemporary education, training and research hub that supports the requirements of a growing multidisciplinary health environment. Key new features include the clinical exam and simulation rooms, a pathology tutorial room and areas zoned for flexible working including quiet individual study and group work areas.

University of Sydney Library staff are also available on-site to support University staff and students in achieving their research, learning and teaching goals.


In order to borrow Westmead Hospital staff and University of Sydney staff and students based at Westmead can fill in a library registration form then visit the Library with identification to complete their registration. There is no membership fee for Westmead Hospital staff and eligible University of Sydney staff and students.

External health professionals and students may apply for membership:

Membership Fees (includes GST)
External Professional and post graduates $220.00 p.a.
AMC/ADEC candidates $110.00 or $66.00 (6 months)
Non-Government organisations $550.00 p.a.
External Undergraduate Students $55.00 (registration fees) + refundable deposit of $100.00
Undergraduate membership available for the academic year only.



The Westmead Hospital Library collection is accessed via Spydus which also includes the holdings of the other Western Sydney Local Health District Libraries;
  • Auburn Hospital,
  • Peter Zelas Library, Blacktown Hospital,
  • Mount Druitt Hospital
  • Mental Health Library Cumberland Hospital.

In addition you can search across the holdings of the:
  • Blue Mountains Hospital
  • Nepean Hospital
  • Forensic and Analytical Science Service

Westmead Hospital staff are able to borrow from any of the above Libraries. Ask Library staff for assistance in reserving a book located at another Library.

You can borrow a maximum of 10 books in total across the library network. Loans are usually for 3 weeks, with the exception of closed reserve items (2 hours).

Westmead Hospital Library has a self-check machine for book loans or you can ask at the Library desk.

Items can be renewed twice provided there is no reservation on the item and it is not already overdue. You can renew online by logging into the Library system. Your ‘Borrower ID’ is your Library barcode and you can reset your password if necessary.

Items not returned by the due date will accrue a fine of 1$ per day per item and you will not be able to borrow if your fines exceed $25.

Interlibrary loans and document delivery

Westmead Hospital Library can assist you by obtaining copies of journal articles and book chapters as well as loans of books when they are not accessible here.

Westmead Hospital Library is part of a network of Australian Health Libraries that provide copies of journal articles and book chapters as well as book loans for free to members. The majority of requests can be supplied by this network and there will be no charge involved.

However, if not available through this network a fee does need to be charged for supply. The minimum charge is $16.50 per article. You will be contacted for approval prior to the request being sent if payment is required.

If you have found a journal article using Ovid (e.g. Medline, Joanna Briggs Institute, Embase) click on the Request the Article link located to the right of the result. Fill in your details ensuring you select Westmead Hospital then click Order.

Alternatively fill in the Interlibrary loan and document delivery form. Please ensure you fill in one form per request.

Literature searches

Library staff can assist by conducting literature searches on your behalf or by assisting you to construct an effective search strategy. Contact the Library to arrange an individual consultation.



Room bookings, Lockers and Computers

Room bookings
Library users may book and use meeting rooms on the same day for individual or group education, training and research activities at the booking screen, located near the main entrance.
Rooms in the library are prioritised for clinical examinations run by Western Sydney Local Health District’s Research and Education Network, and the University of Sydney.
Hospital staff and students can book using the WECC Information and Booking Form
University staff and students should also use the WECC Information and Booking Form except when booking for units of study (exams, educational purposes, etc), when library rooms should be booked through the University's Central Timetabling system.
Lockers are located on the right-hand side of the library entrance. You can choose an empty locker to store personal items. A screen on the locker will prompt you to enter a four-digit code to lock and unlock the locker. The lockers will automatically release after six hours. If you forget your code, leave or lose your items, please see library staff at the help desks or Westmead Hospital Security after-hours.

Workstations are available in the Library for searching the library catalogue, CIAP access, mandatory training, accessing e-learning resources and searching the WSLHD intranet for general information. The Medical, Dental and Bachelor of Oral Health staff and students from Sydney University have access to PCs provided by the University for their use.

Photocopying, Printing and Scanning
Multifunctional Devices are available in the Library for photocopying, printing and scanning. Ask Library staff for assistance if required.


Hospital Department book and serial orders, ISBN allocations and Copyright advice.

Linda Mulheron, Westmead Hospital Library Manager is responsible for co-ordinating activities with respect to the purchase of serials, books and other print and non-print resources across the Hospital. She is also able to assist with allocation of ISBN numbers for in-house staff book publications. Linda is the main advisor for the Western LHD in relation to copyright issues.


Education and training

You can arrange for training on any information and research related topic including:
  • Beginner and advanced searching using specific databases such as Medline and Pubmed
  • Using CIAP (the Clinical Information Access Portal)
  • Developing an effective search strategy
  • Identifying resources for evidence based practice
  • Endnote
  • Keeping up to date

In addition we can tailor sessions for individuals or groups to meet your information needs in the wards, do a presentation on your research days or step you through a clinical problem in your journal club.
