Service Outline

Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital Libraries are responsible for the provision of high quality library services. The Peter Zelas Library is located on Level 1 of the Western Sydney University Clinical School at Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital Library on the ground floor of the main hospital building at Mount Druitt. Our libraries support education, research, evidence-based patient care and continuing personal and professional development of our staff and students.

What are the library's hours?

Monday to Friday - 9:30 to 2:30
Closed public holidays and weekends.


How do I join the library?

A registration form needs to be completed and taken into either Blacktown or Mount Druitt library where a staff member will register you as a borrower.

Who can use the library?

The Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital Libraries provide information services and resources in support of the educational, research, and clinical programs of the staff of Blacktown and Mountt Druitt Hospitals. However, as we are part of Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) all staff members of WSLHD are eligible to borrow. Students may also borrow from the library (conditions apply).

How many books can I check out?

You may have 10 books checked out at any one time.

How long can a book be borrowed?

Books in the Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital Libraries circulating collection may be checked out for a period of three weeks. There is a small collection of items BMDH Closed Reserve which has a 3 day loan period.

Can books be renewed?

Renewals may be made by telephone, online or visiting the library, as long as the item has not been reserved to another library member.

Does the library charge late fines?

The Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital Libraries do not charge late fines and we ask patrons to return books on time as others may be waiting for the same item's return. However, when items are long overdue charges may apply.  When books are overdue you will receive an overdue notice, items may be returned to any of the libraries in WSLHD or ring a library staff member to request an extension of the loan.

Interlibrary Loans

Can I borrow books from other libraries?

Yes as hospital staff your membership entitles you to borrow from other libraries in our network however it is your responsibility to ensure that you abide by the rules of the lending library in question. For example, Westmead and Nepean Libraries have a three week loan period and fines of $1 per day are charged if you exceed the stipulated period.  Students may also borrow from these libraries (conditions apply).

Can I get a copy of an article or a book that the library does not own? *

Yes, you will need to fill out a request form located at the Circulation Desk or ask a library staff member
. * This service is only available to hospital staff.

Do I have to pay for an article or a book loan?

In most cases journal articles and books will be supplied to you free of charge. There are instances when we cannot supply your request through our regular free suppliers, in these rare instances you will be notified and asked if you want to proceed with the request. If you do, we will advise you of the cost of the article or loan and ask you to provide us with a signed request form with your direct supervisor's signature and the cost code that the article should be charged to.

How much are photocopies?

Photocopies are charged at 15 cents for black and white and $1.00 for colour.

Will library staff photocopy materials for me?

The library staff will not photocopy on your behalf.

General questions

What is my username and password for the CIAP (Clinical Information Access Portal) databases?

This is now self-nominated during the CIAP registration process which must be completed online on a WSLHD computer. This may be done in the library or your department.

How do I order a literature search?

Please call 9851 6025 and ask to speak with a librarian.

How do I recommend titles for the collection?

Forms for recommended purchases are available at the Circulation Desk and may be completed by any library user. All recommendations are evaluated by the Library Manager and selected according to their relevance to the library's collection development policy and budgetary considerations. All requesters receive a response.

Does the library accept gifts?

The library accepts gifts, but reserves the right to accept the donation based upon relevancy and usefulness to the collection, completeness of the volume or set, and currency of the information. The library will handle the materials by:
  • Adding the donation to the library collection
  • Forwarding all or part to another library
  • Disposing of any obsolete materials
  • Selling the item received
