Drivers are needed to transport patients to appointments

If you enjoy being an early bird, helping patients and have a drivers licence this role is for you!

Your role will provide transport for patients by driving them to appointments at Blacktown or Mount Druitt Hospitals.

This volunteer position:

  • is usually transporting dialysis patients 
  • starts at 5.45am and usually finish at 1pm
  • drives a 12 seater bus (special drivers licence not required)
  • is required to have an Unrestricted (Full) Licence with all points

From patients current location to Blacktown or Mount Druitt hospitals

Required on any one of the following days – Monday, Tuesday, Thursdays.

Transport escorts are needed to support drivers who are transporting patients

This volunteer position starts at 5.45am and usually finish at 1pm.

Supporting patients who may have memory or diagnosed dementia issues with daily activities & providing company when family carers can't be there.

The volunteer provides support similar to that provided by a family carer. The volunteer program supports the patients family by stepping in as the substitute carer when family are unable to care for their loved one.

The volunteer initially talks with the patient, relative or friends to gain an understanding of the patient’s background, family members, personal preferences and activities they enjoy.

This volunteer position:

  • sits and talks with patients on a one to one basis
  • assists with making the patient comfortable to support their sleep and rest – this may include adjusting pillows or providing warm drinks or a hand massage
  • makes sure the patient is wearing their glasses and hearing aides and checks that these are clean and working properly
  • regularly offers fluids to drink
  • assists the patient when eating and drinking
  • accompanies and helps the patient with walking as advised by the nurses or physiotherapist
  • finds out about activities, music or other stimulating activities that the patient may enjoy
  • supports the patient with activities such as reading to them, playing cards etc.

Supporting patients with activities, cleaning tables and opening lunch packages

The volunteer supports patients to play games such as Bingo and other activities.

The volunteer also helps by clearing tables before lunch. Volunteers may assist patients with opening lunch packages if they are having difficulties.

You will need good communication skills, patience and empathy for elderly people.  Reliability is also important.

Part of this role will also involve feeding patients once the Meal Assistance Program starts on 17th September and if you want to be involved feeding patients you will need to complete the training on 3 September.

Assisting aged care patients during meal times

Would you like to volunteer to assist staff with aged care patients during meal times?

The volunteer provides encouragement, companionship, reassurance and support during meal times. This may involve practical support such as feeding patients.

You will need good communication skills, patience and empathy for elderly people.  Reliability is also important.

Training begins on Monday 3rd September from11am – 1pm. An online orientation and vaccination update are also required.

The program will start on 17th September 2018.

My Experience Matters interviewer/survey collector

My Experience Matters is an electronic survey that invites patients, carers and families to provide feedback on their experience while in hospital.

Volunteers are requested to become involved in this program as interviewers/survey collectors. The aim of collecting information is to improve our care and services. The role of the volunteer will be to attend an allocated ward to collect survey responses. The volunteers will not be required to solve problems for the patients.

Skill requirements:

  • confident talking to people from all walks of life in a hospital setting
  • available for 1-2 hours per week for at least 6 months
  • confident using technology such as an iPad
  • online orientation

Training and ongoing support for volunteers will be provided.

Blacktown and/or Mount Druitt Hospital

1-2 hours per week for at least 6 months
