Struggling to lose weight to improve your health? Maybe we can help!

The Metabolic & Weight Loss Clinic program at Blacktown Hospital provides the following services to help patients manage obesity and its associated illnesses:

  • intensive lifestyle coaching
  • consultations with our dietitian, doctor (endocrinologist), psychologist, and exercise physiologist
  • for some patients, weight loss surgery will also be performed by our surgeons in Blacktown Hospital

Am I eligible to enrol in the Metabolic & Weight Loss program?

What health & lifestyle criteria do I have to meet to be eligible for the program?

  1. In general, to be considered for the program, you should have a body mass index (BMI, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height squared) more than 45 kg/m2 and two obesity related conditions (e.g. high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, fatty liver or heart or kidney damage) or a BMI more than 40 kg/m2 plus type 2 diabetes
  2. You must be mobile enough to travel to the clinic at Blacktown at least twice a month
  3. You should also be strongly considering, or currently undergoing significant lifestyle changes needed to ensure successful weight loss and improvements to your health. Our resources are limited so only highly-motivated patients are enrolled
  4. Patients should not be a current smoker and should have quit at least six months from the time of enrolment in the program. Patients who want to quit smoking should speak to their GP, visit www.icanquit.com.au, download the ‘My QuitBuddy’ app or call the Quitline on 13 78 48.

I don't live in the Blacktown area. Can I still enrol in the program?

Yes, but please note you will be expected to travel to Blacktown University Clinics regularly. Out-of-area patients are expected to travel to the Blacktown University Clinic at program commencement, and then at least every 2-3 months.

Is there a cost to enrol in the program?

The Metabolic & Weight Loss Clinic is a fully publicly funded program. This means there are no out-of-pocket costs to our patients.

How do I get a referral to the program?

We only accept referrals from the following sources - you can’t refer yourself:

  1. A specialist managing a condition that weight loss is intended to improve (e.g. endocrinologist for diabetes, gastroenterologist managing fatty liver disease or a respiratory physician managing sleep apnoea)
  2. General Practitioners (GPs) can refer to the program provided that patients satisfy our enrolment criteria

Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service

The Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service is a free telephone-based health coaching service which can help provide you with the support and motivation you need to reach your own healthy lifestyle goals.

It provides access to advice and support from health coaches who are qualified dietitians, exercise physiologists, psychologists and nurses.
