Library location and hours of service

Where is the Westmead Hospital Library?

Westmead Hospital Library is located on level two of Westmead Hospital, near the Westmead Education and Conference Centre (WECC).

Transport

  • 10 minute walk to the train station
  • Bus stops located close to hospital as well as a shuttle service from the Hospital to Parramatta
  • On campus parking for staff accessed via staff ID
  • Parking for $8.00 per day for externals.

When is the library open?

The library is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
Closed on weekends and Public Holidays.
After hours access available for Clinicians and Sydney University students who are attached to the hospital. You need to register at the Library for access.

Membership

Who can use the Westmead Hospital Library?

The Library provides a lending and information service to staff and students of the Sydney West Area Health Service (SWAHS) free of charge. External Health professionals and students may apply for membership by paying an annual registration fee.The library is available to all Westmead precinct staff, students, academics, researchers and visitors participating in education, training and research activities.

 

How can I borrow books?

You must be a library member to borrow items. Library membership is free for Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) and University of Sydney staff and students. External patrons can purchase annual membership as below:
  • External Professional and post graduates $220.00 p.a.
  • AMC/ADEC candidates $110.00 or $66.00 (6 months)
  • Non-Government organisations $550.00 p.a.
  • External Undergraduate Students $55.00 (registration fees) - refundable deposit of $100.00 (gst ) free. Undergraduate membership available for the academic year only
Library members can borrow items using the self-checkout kiosks, located at the entrance of the library. Librarians are available at help desks, during opening hours, to assist.

 

How many books can I borrow?

You may borrow up to 10 items at one time.

 

How long can I borrow books for?

Each loan period is three weeks, with the exception of restricted items (one week) and closed reserve items (two hours only). An item can be renewed twice if there are no reservations on it. Items not returned by the due date will accrue a fine of $1 per day, per item.

How can I return books?

A return chute is located at the left-hand side of the library entrance.

Interlibrary loans

Can I borrow from other libraries within the WSLHD?

When a book or journal article is not held by the Library, arrangements can usually be made to obtain it from another Library. Different charges are involved with the various service levels.

 

Is there a cost?

Charges for inter-library loans sourced from local and overseas libraries are:

  • Express services (2 hour turnaround time) - $16.50 + $33.00 levy
  • Rush service (24 hour turnaround time) - $16.50 + $16.50 levy
  • Core service (4-10 day turnaround time) - $16.50 + delivery charges

Borrowing, Renewals & Reservations

How many books can I borrow?

The maximum number of items per person across the network is ten. Each loan period is 3 weeks with the exception of restricted items (1 week) and closed reserve items (2 hours only). An item can be renewed maximum (twice) if there are no reservations on it.

 

Training

Does the Library offer training?

The Library in conjunction with Education and Training service offers courses in the following aspects of CIAP (Clinical Information Access Portal).

  • Navigation of the CIAP site including registration
  • Overview of MIMs, Micromedex, Stat Ref, MD Consult, Best Practice BMJ
  • Advance techniques to search comprehensively Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, Nursing@Ovid & EBMR.
In addition we can tailor sessions for the individual or groups to suit your information needs in the wards, or do a presentation on your research days or step you through a clinical problem in your journal clubs.

Equipment

Computers

There are 6 intranet workstations available in the main body of the Library for searching the library catalogue, CIAP access, mandatory training, accessing e-learning resources and searching the WSLHDintranet for general information.
The Medical, Dental and Bachelor of Oral Health students from Sydney University have access to separate PCs provided by the University for their use only. These are housed in the Audio-visual room.

Photocopying, Printing and Scanning
A multifunctional device will allow you to do photocopying and scanning.
Costs:
  • Photocopying : A4 size : colour is $1.00, black and white is 11c, A3 size: colour is $2.00 and b/w is 22c
  • Scanning: Scanned documents can be emailed anywhere within the Western Sydney LHD or saved to a USB
  • Printing: Print jobs are sent to the print release station, next to the printer.

Photocopying and printing are charged via a copy card system. A blank copy card can be purchased from a machine near the photocopiers for $2.20c. This initial $2.20c does not allow any transaction and extra value must be added to the card through the dispensing machine.

How can I book a room in the library?

Library users may book and use meeting rooms on the same day for individual or group education, training and research activities at the booking screen, located near the main entrance.

Rooms in the library are prioritised for clinical examinations run by Western Sydney Local Health District’s Research and Education Network, and the University of Sydney. To book rooms for these or other educational purposes in 2018, please contact Suzanne Kania.

Bookings for 2019 will open in September. More information on the request process will be available in late August 2018.

How can I use the lockers at the library?

Lockers are located on the right-hand side of the library entrance. You can choose an empty locker to store personal items. A screen on the locker will prompt you to enter a four-digit code to lock and unlock the locker. The lockers will automatically release after six hours. If you forget your code, leave or lose your items, please see library staff at the help desks or Westmead Hospital Security after-hours.

Can I print at the library?

Yes. Multi-function printers are available in the printing room that provide print, copy, scan and fax facilities. Western Sydney Local Health network users can print using monitor photocopying cards.

University of Sydney users can print using the ‘Follow-Me’ printing service, either by using the computers in the computer hub, or your own personal device connected to the University of Sydney wireless network. For more information on printing services for the University of Sydney, click here.
