Birth can be unpredictable however when you are both well prepared with knowledge, techniques and good support then you are giving yourself and your baby the best opportunity for an optimal birth experience and feel less overwhelmed.
 Education has the potential and power to transform. The Childbirth and Parenting Educators at Westmead Hospitals are a team of highly trained and experienced midwives and physiotherapists. Each educator passionately believes that preparing for the birth of a baby is essential to enable the best possible birth experience. A positive birth experience sets new parents up for positive parenting. This helps them to feel more confident in their new roles. 
At Westmead Hospital we provide a variety of programs to meet the individual needs of expectant parents. We encourage all pregnant women to attend with their partners and/or a chosen birth companion.

Having a Baby: Evening Series

The Evening program consists of 7 sessions held one evening a week for 7 weeks. Each class runs for 2 hours, 7pm - 9pm and includes a supper break. The sessions are held on various nights of the week (Mon – Thur) to suit your schedule. The first 4 sessions present the Birth Course curriculum and there are 3 sessions on starting out with baby, parenting and breastfeeding.

Birth Course at Westmead Hospital is a unique childbirth preparation program that brings together only evidence based techniques and practices. The techniques that you learn for your birth in this course have been subjected to a randomised controlled trial (conducted by Kate Levett and published in the British Medical Journal in 2016). This trial demonstrated significantly improved outcomes for women and babies.

First time parents-to-be benefit enormously from these classes, as there is plenty of time to interact and discuss a range of topics from labour and birth, to breastfeeding and parenting.

If you book into this Evening Series, you do not need to book into any other childbirth education classes.

Exercise and back care in pregnancy - women only

This is a 2 hour session held once a month for women who are interested in keeping fit and healthy during pregnancy or who have questions to ask about the changes occurring to their body.

WOMEN EXPERIENCING LOW BACK AND PELVIC GIRDLE PAIN ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND

This session is facilitated by a physiotherapist who specialises in pregnancy related issues.

During the session, you will explore:

  • Changes and discomforts of pregnancy
  • Back and pelvic pain: management strategies
  • Exercises to help you stay fit and feel good in pregnancy, including a gentle exercise session
  • Pelvic floor muscle function
  • Fitness and exercise guidelines
  • Opportunity for questions and discussion

Saturday Birth Course Program

Birth Course at Westmead Hospital is a unique childbirth preparation that brings together only evidence based techniques and practices. The techniques that you learn for your birth in this course have been subjected to a randomised controlled trial (conducted by Kate Levett and published in the British Medical Journal in 2016). This trial demonstrated significantly improved outcomes for women and babies. The Birth Course is presented on 2 consecutive Saturdays for 5.5 hours each day. There a variety of start times for you to choose from.

As these 2 days only cover ‘labour and birth’ you will need to book into the ‘breastfeeding workshop’ and the ‘staring out with baby’ workshop to ensure you have all the knowledge and skills you need to start your parenting journey.

Antenatal Breastfeeding Workshop

This is a 3 hour workshop, held on a Saturday morning, 9:30am - 12:30pm and a Friday evening 6pm - 9pm, for women and their partners. A tea break is included. Ideal for: women and their partner attending the Childbirth and Parenting Education – Saturday or Sunday Birth Course Workshop; women who have had previous difficulties breastfeeding; or women who require additional information not provided in other programs.

Topics include:

  • Understanding how breastfeeding works
  • Positions for breastfeeding
  • Signs of successful breastfeeding
  • Normal behaviours for breastfed babies
  • Identifying possible breastfeeding problems and what to do
  • Where to get help
  • Dad’s role - a key to successful breastfeeding
  • Diet, medications and alcohol with breastfeeding
  • Feeling confident

Antenatal Breastfeeding Information Session - FREE

These sessions run for 2 hours once a month on a Thursday from 10am - 12noon.

You may be about to become a mother for the first time or you may have had previous difficulties breastfeeding. The breastfeeding information sessions aim to answer all of your questions and explain any myths that you may have heard regarding breastfeeding your baby

What is covered in the information session?

  • Why breastfeeding is important and the risks of not breastfeeding
  • How your breasts make milk- supply and demand
  • Skin to skin contact and the first feed
  • Feeding cues and when to feed baby
  • Positioning and attachment of baby at the breast
  • Rooming in- staying close to baby
  • Normal newborn behavior
  • Signs baby is feeding well
  • Normal weight changes for baby and breast changes for mum
  • Community supports
  • Returning to work- expressing breast milk
  • Impact of dummies and bottle feeding on breastfeeding
  • Common breastfeeding problems
  • Contraception

Remember to bring a drink and small snack with you to the information session.

There are also refreshments available from Zouki café on level 2 of the Hospital.

Antenatal Breastfeeding Education for Pregnant Women with Diabetes - FREE

You need to have diabetes and be at least 34 weeks pregnant to attend this education session.

These sessions run fortnightly on Thursdays for 1 hour from 12noon - 1pm in the Westmead Hospital Education and Conference Centre (WECC)

This breastfeeding workshop is designed to give you the right information and support for breastfeeding your baby and is facilitated by a member of the lactation team. It will provide additional information that is not provided in other programs.

  • How to prepare for breastfeeding
  • Expressing and storing your breast milk prior to baby's birth
  • Postnatal care of diabetic women
  • How to manage your diabetes in labour
  • What happens to you and your baby after birth
  • What happens if my baby needs to go to the Special Care Nursery

Starting out with Baby Workshop

This 4-hour-long workshop brings together the skills you need to bring your baby home and parent successfully. This pre-birth workshop explores the reality of parenting and it is recommended that you attend this course from approximately 30 weeks. This workshop provides information on understanding your baby’s needs, settling techniques, home safety and equipment, handling and care of baby, and becoming a family. If this is your first baby we strongly recommend that you also attend either the Saturday or Sunday Birth Course. It is also ideal for couples who are having an elective caesarean section, and those who want a greater understanding of the newborn.

Topics include but not limited to:

  • Calming an unsettled baby
  • Communicating with your baby
  • Parenting issues – including postnatal depression, returning to work, roles and identities
  • And more!!

Childbirth and Parenting Education for Mandarin Speakers

This program is designed to meet the learning needs of women and their partners who speak Mandarin. The program explores western birth and parenting practices and procedures used at Westmead hospital. You must be birthing your baby at Westmead Public Hospital to receive a discounted fee. All women booked to birth their baby at another hospital must pay the full fee. When completing the booking please enter the details of the pregnant woman only. The series are culturally sensitive and facilitated by a midwife, fluent in Mandarin who is also a new migrant mother and Certified Childbirth Educator.

The program is run on Friday evenings 7-9pm or Saturday afternoons from 4-6pm for 6 weeks.

  • Caring for your newborn
  • Stages of labour
  • Self-help techniques during labour

Expecting Twins or More

This is an additional workshop for those couples expecting twins or more. Parents-to-be of multiples are encouraged to attend this workshop before 34 weeks gestation if possible. DVDs specific to multiple birth and parenting are shown. The educator is a mother of twins.

This program is offered on a Saturday throughout the year. The workshop starts at 9am and finishes at 1pm, with a morning tea break.

This program is discounted for those who have booked into the 'Having a Baby' evening course series or Saturday/Sunday Birth Course. Make sure you include your booking number when completing the registration.

We advise that you first attend the 'Labour and Birth' classes before this workshop.

Cost: $30.00 if you are attending the Birth Course on a Saturday or Sunday.

Cost: $50.00 if you are not attending the Birth Course an a Saturday or Sunday.

Birth Unit Tours

Birth Unit tours are only for women booked to have their baby at Westmead Hospital.

Birth Unit tours are free of charge and run for approximately 20 minutes every Tuesday at 7pm and 7:30pm.

**You only need 1 ticket per couple and you only need to enter the details of the pregnant woman**

There is a maximum of 8 couples per tour. Children are not allowed to attend the tour.

If you are attending childbirth classes on a weeknight or weekend, the Birth Unit tour is included as part of the class and you do not need to book into a separate Birth Unit tour.

Meet at the Information desk in the Main Hospital prior to your tour time. The educator will meet you to take you on the tour of the Birth Unit.

The tour may be cancelled without notice due to priority healthcare needs in the Birth Unit.
