Birth Unit tours

Birth Unit Tours are held every Tuesday at 7pm and 7:30pm if needed.

A booking for the tour is required. There is a maximum of 9 couples per tour.

The tour is free of charge and runs for approximately 20 minutes.

The tour maybe cancelled without notice due to priority healthcare needs in the Birth Unit.

Meet at the Information desk in the Main Hospital prior to your tour time. The educator will meet you to take you on the tour of the Birth Unit.

Evening Series

The Evening series consist of 6 sessions held one evening a week for 6 weeks. Each class runs for 2 hours, 7pm - 9pm and includes a supper break. The series are held on various nights of the week to suit your schedule.
First time parents-to-be benefit enormously from these classes, as there is plenty of time to interact and discuss a range of topics from labour and birth, to breastfeeding and parenting.

Topics include but not limited to:
  • How labour starts
  • Labouring at home and when to come to hospital
  • Positions for labour and birth – being active
  • Normal birth
  • Pain relief options
  • Tour of the Birth Unit
  • Cesarean Birth
  • Birth requiring medical assistance
  • Breastfeeding
  • Settling an unsettled baby
  • Communicating with your baby
  • Parenting issues – including postnatal depression, returning to work, roles and identities.
  • And more!!

A reunion session is included in the program. The reunion is held approximately 3-4 months after the final session. The Educator facilitates the series.

Exercise and back care in pregnancy - women only

This is a 2 hour session held once a month for women who are interested in keeping fit and healthy during pregnancy or who have questions to ask about the changes occurring to their body.

WOMEN EXPERIENCING LOW BACK AND PELVIC GIRDLE PAIN ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND

This session is facilitated by a physiotherapist who specialises in pregnancy related issues.

During the session, you will explore:

  • Changes and discomforts of pregnancy
  • Back and pelvic pain: management strategies
  • Exercises to help you stay fit and feel good in pregnancy, including a gentle exercise session
  • Pelvic floor muscle function
  • Fitness and exercise guidelines
  • Opportunity for questions and discussion

Childbirth and parenting education for Mandarin speakers

This program is designed to meet the learning needs of women and their partners who speak Mandarin. The program explores western birth and parenting practices and procedures used at Westmead hospital. You must be birthing your baby at Westmead Public Hospital to receive a discounted fee. All women booked to birth their baby at another hospital must pay the full fee. When completing the booking please enter the details of the pregnant woman only. The series are culturally sensitive and facilitated by a midwife, fluent in Mandarin who is also a new migrant mother and Certified Childbirth Educator.

The program is run on Friday evenings 7-9pm or Saturday afternoons from 4-6pm for 6 weeks.

  • Caring for your newborn
  • Stages of labour
  • Self-help techniques during labour

Prenatal Breastfeeding Workshop

This is a 3 hour workshop, held on a Saturday morning, 10am - 1pm and a Friday evening 6pm - 9pm, for women and their partners. A tea break is included.

Ideal for: women and their partner attending the Childbirth and Parenting Education - Saturday Workshop; women who have had previous difficulties breastfeeding; or women who require additional information not provided in other programs.

Topics include:

  • Understanding how breastfeeding works
  • Positions for breastfeeding
  • Signs of successful breastfeeding
  • Normal behaviours for breastfed babies
  • Identifying possible breastfeeding problems and what to do
  • Where to get help
  • Dad’s role - a key to successful breastfeeding
  • Diet, medications and alcohol with breastfeeding
  • Feeling confident

Cost: $25.00 but FREE to couples who have booked and paid for the Childbirth and Parenting Education Series - Saturday Workshop.

Saturday Workshop

This is an intensive one-day workshop held on a Saturday. It is a very condensed version of the Evening Series. The workshop commences at 9am and concludes at 3pm. Morning tea is included, however you are asked to bring or buy your own lunch. This is ideal for couples who are: time poor; already have good knowledge of childbirth and parenting; or would like a refresher course for second child or partners’ first child.

  • Positions for labour and birth
  • Normal birth
  • Pain relief options
  • Caesarean birth
  • Caring for your new baby
  • Parenting issues
  • Birth Unit Tour

Topics are discussed briefly due to time restraints. However there is always time for questions.

Cost of the Saturday Workshop also includes free registration to the Pre-natal Breastfeeding Workshop. The Prenatal Breastfeeding Workshop must be booked at the same time.

2 x Half-Day Saturday or Sunday Workshop

The Saturday Half Day Workshop consist of 2 sessions held on consecutive Saturdays or Sundays. Each session lasts for 4 hours each and includes a break, which makes it less condensed than the all day workshop. The workshop allows for more time to discuss a range of topics from labour and birth to breastfeeding and parenting and therefore is more suited for first time parents-to-be.

Expecting Twins or More

This program follows the same format as the Childbirth and Parenting Education - Evening Series, but is tailored to meet the learning needs of the couple expecting TWINS or more. Parents-to-be of twins are encouraged to commence this class around 25 weeks gestation if possible. DVDs specific to multiple birth and parenting are shown. The educator is a mother of twins.

This program is offered on Wednesday evenings, 7pm - 9pm for 6 weeks. A supper break is included.

Multicultural antenatal classes

Our MOMS (Mothers of Many Societies) program is a 9 week program after the baby is born. MOMs program aims to make the motherhood journey easier and more enjoyable through education and social networking.

Hydrotherapy exercise classes for new mums and mums-to-be

The classes are best suited to women experiencing pelvic girdle pain and core muscle weakness. Classes are available to pregnant women from 16 weeks gestation until birth and for new mothers from 6 weeks after the birth of their baby for a total of 6 sessions.

Medical Clearance forms

You will need a written referral for hydrotherapy and a Medical Clearance Form signed by your doctor. Once the referral is received you will be put onto the waiting list and contacted when a spot is available. You can access the medical clearance form here.

Attendance

If you are not able to attend a class, please phone us or you may be taken off the list.

Class detail

Classes are held on Tuesdays from 11am to 12pm.

Cost to book: Nil.

Cancellations:

If you cannot attend an appointment please advise us immediately. Please call reception on 02 9845 6500 to rebook your appointment.

If you call out of hours you can leave a message. We will then phone you back during business hours to arrange a new appointment time.

If you do not attend your appointment and you have not advised the physiotherapy department, we may discharge you from our service and notify your referring doctor.

Free Antenatal Breastfeeding information Session

These sessions run for 2 hours once a month on a Thursday from 9.30-11.30am.

You may be about to become a mother for the first time or you may have had previous difficulties breastfeeding. The breastfeeding information sessions aim to answer all of your questions and explain any myths that you may have heard regarding breastfeeding your baby

What is covered in the information session?

•Why breastfeeding is important and the risks of not breastfeeding

•How your breasts make milk- supply and demand

•Skin to skin contact and the first feed

•Feeding cues and when to feed baby

•Positioning and attachment of baby at the breast

•Rooming in- staying close to baby

•Normal newborn behavior

•Signs baby is feeding well

•Normal weight changes for baby and breast changes for mum

•Community supports

•Returning to work- expressing breast milk

•Impact of dummies and bottle feeding on breastfeeding

•Common breastfeeding problems

•Contraception

Remember to bring a drink and small snack with you to the information session.

There is also refreshments available from Zouki café, level 2.
