Overview

The Brain Injury Research Team was established in 1994 to conduct research with traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors across the continuum of care from the Intensive Care Unit, through into inpatient and community rehabilitation settings. The research group undertakes high-quality, multidisciplinary research aiming to improve clinically meaningful outcomes for both individuals with brain injury and their families.

The Research Team has strong collaborations with National and International partners in both university and industry, with significant impacts across multiple pre-clinical, clinical and epidemiological areas such as:
  • spasticity management (with a focus on outcome measurement)
  • the impact of injury on life expectancy in TBI survivors
  • diagnosis and management of Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity

 

Our People

A/Prof Ian Baguley, Research Team Leader - is a Senior Staff Specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine at Westmead Hospital’s Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service. He holds academic appointments with the Medical School of the University of Sydney and the Department of Psychology at Macquarie University. He is widely published, particularly in traumatic brain injury and spasticity management and regularly lectures both nationally and internationally. He obtained a PhD in 2008 investigating Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2014 for services to brain injury rehabilitation.

Dr Hannah Barden, Clinical Research Officer – is an Occupational Therapist working as a Clinical Researcher in the Brain Injury Research Team. Her primary area of research is spasticity measurement and management in acquired brain injury. Hannah was awarded her PhD by the University of Sydney in 2015 for her research on a novel approach to upper limb performance measurement with adults undergoing spasticity management. She has published a number of original articles in this area and has presented at both national and international conferences.

 

Current Research

The Research Team continues to be involved in producing a wide variety of research outputs, with current areas of research including botulinum toxin A use in spasticity, sexual function after TBI, Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity, and occupational performance and cognitive retraining.
