The Westmead Network Physician Training Program

The Westmead Network Physician Training Program offers a vast range of medical terms including new Clinical Pharmacology term at Westmead and additional Infectious Disease term in Blacktown. The program prides itself on being a supportive network and is always on hand to assist trainees.

The Westmead Network consists of:
  • Westmead Hospital
  • Blacktown Hospital
  • Hornsby Hospital
  • Orange Hospital

 

Westmead Hospital

  • Westmead is the major teaching hospital of the University of Sydney for medical and dental students and one of Australia’s largest centres for postgraduate training to a speciality level in all fields
  • Westmead Hospital is a specialised tertiary referral hospital for the western metropolitan area, which has a population of 1.5 million people and 15 local government areas. It also acts as the local hospital for the immediate surrounding community
  • Patients are admitted by referral and through extensive Accidents and Emergency and Outpatient Services
  • As well as General Wards, there is a range of high dependency wards at Westmead Hospital includingCoronary Care Unit, an Intensive Care Unit, and a Special Care Unit. For a full list of services, refer to the table in the links below.
  • Westmead Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Australia seeing over 52,000 adult patients annually. It is supported by tertiary specialist services including 24 hour/7 days per week intervention cardiology, trauma services, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery and toxicology
  • Westmead Medical Research Foundation provides fundraising support and community advocacy for medical research and patient care at Westmead.
  • Westmead Hospital is the base for the New South Wales helicopter operations of CareFlight air ambulance service. Its aircraft and trained medical and operational crews respond to emergencies threatening the life, health and safety of people caused through medical emergency, illness, natural disaster, accidents or mishap/ Within Westmead Hospital exists the prevention and death statistics
  • Hospital services include: Acute Intervention Medicine, Aged Care, Neurology and Rehabilitation, AlliedHealth, Anaesthetics, Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit, Cardiac Services, Dermatology, Diabetes andEndocrinology, Division of Imaging, Emergency Services, General Surgery, Intensive Unit, NuclearMedicine & Ultrasound, Nursing, Ophthalmology, Oral Health Dentistry, Pathology Services, PatientEducation, Public Health & community Medicine, Radiology, Renal & Transplant Surgery, ResidentSupport Unit, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, Mental & Sexual Health, Plastic Surgery & Infectious Disease.

Blacktown Hospital

  • Blacktown Hospital is an acute care hospital. We are committed to providing the highest quality of healthcare to the people we serve in a compassionate and respectful manner.
  • Blacktown Hospital provides a 24-hour emergency service, intensive and high dependency care, specialist adult acute medical and surgical services, obstetrics and newborn care and mental health services.Ambulatory care services provided on site at Blacktown include satellite renal dialysis, chemotherapy,primary care and community health, drug and alcohol and dental clinic services.
  • Blacktown hospital has approximately 400 beds, however is increasing in size with the wonderful renovations. It provides a wide range of health services including;
  • Ante-Natal/Gynaecology Unit; Delivery Suite; Post-Natal; Special Care Nursery; Acute Medical; CoronaryCare and Coronary Stepdown Unit; Diabetes Centre; Acute Rehabilitation; Acute Stroke Unit; Pre-Admission Clinic; Day Procedure Unit; Orthopaedic; Surgical; Surgical/Medical Short Stay Unit; IntensiveCare Unit; High Dependency Oncology Services; Mental Health; Regional Dialysis Centre; CommunityHealth Services including Dental.
  • The hospital is a teaching hospital of the University of Western Sydney's Blacktown-Mount Druitt ClinicalSchool (commenced in October 2007) and University of Sydney’s Western Clinical School.
  • The Hospital complex also includes Bungarribee House, a psychiatric unit that, along with Cumberland Hospital provides mental health services to western Sydney.

Hornsby Hospital

  • Hornsby Hospital is a teaching hospital of the University of Sydney.
  • The Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Health Service incorporates a 312 bed, major metropolitan hospital providing a comprehensive range of secondary level services, outpatient services, six community health centres and ten early childhood centres. Located on the main campus are NSLHD mental health services including an inpatient mental health ward (Lindsay Madew Unit), a Psychiatric Emergency Centre (PEC)and a Mental Health Intensive Care Unit (MHICU).
  • Major services provided are: Elective & Emergency Surgery, Respiratory Medicine, Obstetrics & Paediatrics, Cardiology, General Medicine, Emergency & Critical Care Services, Aged Care & Rehabilitation, Neurology & Stroke Services, Mental Health and Community Services.
  • Other services include Pharmacy Department, The Medical Imaging Department, the Education Centre andCardiology.

Orange Hospital

  • Orange Health Service’s new hospital opened in March 2011 on the Bloomfield site.
  • It is the largest rural hospital in NSW, comprising of 520 beds that include mental health and forensic psychiatry.
  • In 2012 a new Cancer Services Unit was opened and radiation therapy was introduced.
  • Services include: Cancer treatment, Coronary Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency, elective surgery, acute medical, short stay medical, Day Surgery Unit, Diabetes Service, Renal Dialysis (including outreach), rehabilitation. Stoke Unit, Community Health Services including dental. Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Orange is trialling with the Clinical Excellence Commission, a new model of unit and team based care in an Acute and General Medical 26 bed ward.
