The Sydney West and Greater Southern (SWaGS) Psychiatry Training Network is committed to providing a supportive climate for psychiatry training and can boast high quality supervision and protected time to attend academic programs.

Essentially, the focus of our program is for the trainee to acquire applicable core competencies, providing all trainees with:

  • a broad range of clinical and non-clinical experience relevant to achieving core competencies
  • where applicable, the facilitation of high quality exam preparation activities.
  • general education program that is clinically relevant (this may include: case presentations and management, skills acquisition/assessment, scenario management, use of skill labs where available)
  • other training requirements as appropriate with a large range of subspecialty terms
  • well-resourced inpatient units with excellent supervision for 1st year trainees
  • allocation of rotations with priority based on trainees requirements to facilitate rapid progression through training
  • supportive environment, with supervision and training by RANZCP Accredited supervisors and examiners and a high success rate in RANZCP Examinations
  • a wide range of specialty areas in which to select a scholarly project to complete RANZCP requirements
  • training in RANZCP Advanced Training Certificate programs (for Stage 3), that comprise:
    • Addiction psychiatry
    • Adult psychiatry
    • Child and adolescent psychiatry
    • Consultation–liaison psychiatry
    • Forensic psychiatry
    • Psychiatry of old age
    • Psychotherapy

 

SWaGS rotations include:

  • forensic psychiatry
  • adult acute psychiatry, including inpatient and community
  • old age psychiatry
  • consultation Liaison
  • addiction Psychiatry
  • rehabilitation psychiatry
  • child and adolescent psychiatry
  • early intervention
  • psychotherapy

 

Trainees who complete the RANZCP 2012 competency based training program are eligible to become Fellows of the RANZCP (FRANZCP). This qualifies them to practise independently as consultant psychiatrists in Australia or New Zealand.

The Westmead Psychotherapy Program include four modalities within the Certificate of Advanced Training in the Psychotherapies.
Trainees/Fellows-in-training complete the formal teaching program and case requirements of one of the following modalities only:

  • individual dynamic psychotherapies
  • structured and brief psychotherapies
  • group psychotherapies
  • family and couples therapy.

All our rotations are accredited by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and the following Terms are available for training:

Stage 1 – 12 months Adult Psychiatry out of which at least 6 months in an acute inpatient unit • 6 months adult Acute Psychiatry
• 6 months acute
Stage 2 – 24 months training at 1.0 FTE (12 months in mandatory and 12 months in variable) • General Psychiatry
• Psychotherapy
• Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
• Consultation Liaison Psychiatry
• Addiction Psychiatry
• Psychiatry of Old Age
• Forensic Psychiatry
Stage 3 – 24 months training at 1.0 FTE 6 months FTE in selected area of practice:
• Addiction Psychiatry
• Adult Psychiatry
• Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
• Consultation Liaison Psychiatry
• Forensic Psychiatry
• Indigenous Psychiatry
• Psychotherapies

The Network comprises of multiple sites across NSW, specifically in Western Sydney and Greater Southern regions. Sites include:
