Membership

How can I access the Cumberland Library catalogue?

Membership of the Library is free to all staff of Western Sydney Local Health District (LHD). Please complete the Library Registration Form.

Who can use the Cumberland Library?
Staff from other Health Services and health professionals who are not employed by the N.S.W. Department of Health can apply to the Manager of the Mental Health Library for borrowing membership. This costs $110 per year (including GST). This membership gives borrowing rights to the Mental Health Library collections only.
Non-profit and community organisations can also apply for membership. The organisation must nominate a primary borrower who has responsibility for the membership (including financial responsibility for items lost or damaged on loan), they can authorise up to 4 others from the same organisation to use the same membership. Please contact the Library for further details.

Borrowing

What's in the Cumberland Hospital Library collection?
The Mental Health Library is the major mental health library for western Sydney, providing a library/information service for mental health workers, researchers and students. All Western Sydney & Nepean Blue Mtns LHD employees are welcome to borrow from the Library and make full use of its service. The Library holds over 5,000 books, 200 journal titles and 200 multimedia resources. The Mental Health Library also contains the collection for the Transcultural Health Centre (Diversity Health Institute).

How long can I borrow for?
3 weeks - Books, DVDs, CD-Roms and Videos (excluding reference). A maximum of 10 items can be borrowed from across the LHD. Items may be renewed twice - either by phone, over the Internet/Intranet or in person.
Journals are not for loan and are arranged alphabetically by their title.

How can I access the Cumberland Library catalogue?
You can access the WSLHD Library Services Catalogue here and here Spydus.

The following databases (and more) are available on the Intranet and Internet via CIAP (Clinical Information Access Portal) Medline, PsycInfo, Nursing @ OVID, EMBASE, Cochrane, MIMS.

Interlibrary loans

What are interlibrary loans?
An interlibrary loans is when the library obtains copies of journal articles and book chapters, as well as loans of book, when they are not accessible through Library resources.

Is there a cost involved?
The Library is part of a network of Health Libraries throughout Australia that provide copies of journal articles and book chapters as well as book loans for free. Majority of requests can be supplied by this network and there will be no charge involved, however, there are times when a fee is charged for supply. The minimum charge is $16.50 per article. You will be contacted prior to the request being sent if payment is required.

How do I request an interlibrary loan?
To request an interlibrary loan complete an Interlibrary Loan Request Form. This form is available on the eForms page or hardcopies are available in the Library. Please ensure you fill in one form per request and hand the form the Library staff.
If you have found a journal article using the Ovid database, simply click on the Request the Article to request a copy of the article.

Equipment

Computers
There are 8 PC's available in the library where users can access the online library catalogue. The WSLHD Intranet and Internet (limited access - ask library staff for details) and are also available.

Printing, copying and scanning
The library has a Multifunction Device that prints, copies and scans. Photocopying in the Library is free to Western Sydney LHD staff for work related purposes. Copies are 11 cents per page for non LHN staff, and for personal copying. Photocopying of items held in the Mental Health Library can be done for staff who are not located on the Cumberland Campus. All requests for photocopies must comply with Copyright Act regulations and be on the designated photocopy request form which can be faxed or emailed on request.

Books in the library are organised on the shelves according to the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme.

Renew items

You can renew items by following these steps:
  • Go to the Library Catalogue
  • Enter your Barcode No (found at the back of your employee card)
  • and PIN at the top right of the page. If you do not have a barcode number please see Library staff to register for the Library and obtain a barcode number. If you do not know your password click Forgot Your PIN?
  • Current Loans
  • Renew Selections

Reserve items from another Library

You can reserve items from another Library to be picked up at Mental Hospital LibraryCumberland Hospital Mental Health by contacting library staff. If the item is currently borrowed you can reserve the item yourself by following these steps:

  • Go to the Library Catalogue
  • Enter your Barcode No (found at the back of your employee card) and PIN at the top right of the page. If you do not have a barcode number please see Library staff to register for the Library and obtain a barcode number. If you do not know your password click Forgot your PIN?
  • Search for the item you would like to reserve
  • Tick the items you would like to reserve
  • Click Reserve Selections

New item email alert


If you would like to be notified via email when a new item is added to the catalogue based on certain criteria follow these steps:

  • Go to the Library Catalogue
  • Enter your Barcode No (found at the back of your employee card) and PIN at the top right of the page. If you do not have a barcode number please see Library staff to register for the Library and obtain a barcode number. If you do not know your password click Forgot your PIN?
  • Click the New Alert Profile tab
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to fill in all required details
  • Click Save

Create and view saved lists of items

The Library Catalogue allows you to save items to lists to view later.

To create and view lists follow these steps:

  • Go to the Library Catalogue
  • Enter your Barcode No (found at the back of your employee card) and PIN at the top right of the page. If you do not have a barcode number please see Library staff to register for the Library and obtain a barcode number. If you do not know your password click Forgot your PIN?
  • Search for items
  • Click the small arrow next to Savedlists, click Add new savedlist, enter a Description then click Add
  • Tick the items you would like to save then click Save Selections to save into your newly created list
  • If you would like to change the list to save to click the small arrow next to Savedlists, under Change savedlist to: select the required list, then follow step 5 above.
  • To view your saved lists, click on the Home icon then click My SavedList

Librarians can conduct a literature search to assist with patient care and research based on capacity. To request a literature search complete a Literature Search Request Form

How do I request an interlibrary loan or document delivery?

If you have found a journal article using Ovid (e.g. Medline, Joanna Briggs Institute, Embase) click on the Request the Article link located to the right of the result. Fill in your details ensuring you select Cumberland Hospital & Community Mental Health Teams & Community Health Centre then click Order.
Fill in the Interlibrary loan and document delivery form. Please ensure you fill in one form per request.

General Questions

What is my username and password for the CIAP (Clinical Information Access Portal) databases?

This is now self-nominated during the CIAP registration process which must be completed online on a WSLHD computer. This may be done in the library or your department.

How do I order a literature search?

Does the library accept gifts?

The library accepts gifts, but reserves the right to accept the donation based upon relevancy and usefulness to the collection, completeness of the volume or set, and currency of the information. The library will handle the materials by:
  • Adding the donation to the library collection
  • Forwarding all or part to another library
  • Disposing of any obsolete materials
  • Selling the item received
